As previously mentioned, the Nigerian authorities targeted several cryptocurrency exchanges Including Binance, for allegedly evading taxes and tampering with the value of the Naira, the nation’s official fiat currency. After receiving an invitation to meet in Nigeria on February 26, 2024, Gambaryan was taken into custody without being allowed to contact his relatives, lawyers, or the American embassy. He has been under the custody of Nigerian authorities ever since.
The CEO of Binance, Richard Teng, released a statement on August 27, 2024, regarding Tigran Gambaryan, a former federal agent of the United States. Teng voiced concern over Gambaryan’s declining physical and mental well-being as a result of not having access to legal representation or medical care. Teng disputed the assertions made by the Nigerian government that connected Gambaryan’s imprisonment to Binance’s purported effect on the nation’s economy. He demanded international advocacy and U.S. government engagement to ensure humanitarian reasons for Gambaryan’s release.

His wife had made public remarks regarding her husband’s health last month, and his condition was already subpar. She claimed that despite his dire circumstances and need for medical attention, the Nigerian government is not helping, which is strongly opposed to fundamental human rights.
